Health Benefits of Intermittent Fasting.

There has been a lot of buzz lately about the many health benefits of intermittent fasting(fasting that is controlled within a set number of hours – ideally 18-24 hours). In this article, I will discuss why fasting is so healthy for you and how you can start implementing it into your routine for maximum benefits.

So why fast? Numerous studies have shown that intermittent fasting promotes great health for your body, mind, and soul. Here is a list of some of the many benefits:

1. Promotes weight loss and burns body fat.

Intermittent fasting allows the body to use fat as its main source of energy instead of glucose(sugar) by going into a state of ketosis(fat burning) once all your glucose reserves are used up.. Additionally, intermittent fasting enhances hormone function to facilitate weight loss. Lower insulin levels, higher growth hormone levels and increased amounts of norepinephrine all increase the breakdown of body fat and facilitate its use for energy. For this reason, short-term fasting actually increases your metabolic rate, helping you burn even more calories.

2. Reduces insulin resistance, lowering your risk of type 2 diabetes:

Intermittent fasting has been shown to have major benefits for insulin resistance and lead to an impressive reduction in blood sugar levels  In human studies on intermittent fasting,  blood sugar has been reduced by 3-6%, while insulin has been reduced by 20-31%.

3. Reduces inflammation:

Inflammation is the body’s response to outside threats like stress, injuries, infections, and other chemical toxins but chronic inflammation can cause diseases such as; asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and cancer. Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have found that a compound produced when fasting blocks a part of the immune system involved in inflammatory disorders.

4. Reduces oxidative stress:

Fasting decreases the accumulation of oxidative radicals in the cell, and thereby prevents oxidative damage to cellular proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids associated with aging and disease.

5. Improves brain function and promotes greater mental clarity:

Illuminated Human Brain

Fasting has been shown to improve brain function and improve mental clarity because it boosts the production of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF.)

BDNF activates brain stem cells to convert into new neurons, and triggers numerous other chemicals that promote neural health. This protein also protects your brain cells from changes associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

6. Promotes longevity:

As previously mentioned, fasting can cause the body to produce more Human Growth Hormone. This hormone is actually closely connected to the aging process. When the body produces less HGH, it tends to age faster too. So in effect, it is safe to conclude that fasting can help the body age more slowly

7. Prevents heart disease:

When you consume too much cholesterol, your triglyceride levels may shoot up, making you more prone to heart disease. Fasting has been known to decrease levels of bad cholesterol in the body, which means that it also decreases the formation of triglycerides. Another interesting thing to note is that fasting does nothing to the levels of good cholesterol of HDL in the body.

8. Boosts immune system:

Intermittent fasting forces the body to use stores of glucose, fat, and ketones, but it also breaks down a significant portion of white blood cells that trigger stem cell regeneration of new immune cells.

9. Gives your digestive system a rest:

While the majority of disease begin in the digestive system, giving it a rest will radically improve the beneficial bacteria in your gut, which will in turn improve your immunity to such disease. Also, with no food in the digestive system, this makes room for more energy in the body – the digestive tract is one of the most energy absorbing systems in the body.

10. Enhances spirituality:

Fasting for spirituality allows us to feel better both consciously and physically. With a lighter body and a clearer mind we become more aware and grateful for the things around us.

Some tips on how to go about fasting:

If you’ve never fasted before, it could seem like a daunting task. Going a full day without food could seem  intimidating and downright impossible. Here are some tips on how to go about fasting that have worked for me:

1. Don’t attempt your first fast to be 24 hours long. Shoot for 16 hours. I have found the best way to accomplish this is to eat breakfast and lunch and skip dinner. Once you’ve become comfortable skipping dinner, skip lunch too.

2. Drink lots of lemon water. Drinking lemon water will help flush the toxins out of your system while giving your body vitamins and minerals.

3. Pick a day where you don’t have a lot to do. Maybe a lazy Sunday where you can just lay around.

4. Don’t workout on fasting days. Pretty self explanatory.

5. If you get hungry, eat something. Try to make it a healthy fat so Coconutsyour body stays in a ketonic state and you continue to burn fat. I like eating shredded coconut or coconut oil.

6. When you “break” the fast, eat a healthy salad. The fibrous greens will help clean out your digestive system.

7. Once your body is comfortable with intermittent fasting, try to incorporate it into your routine once a week.

I hope this helps shed some light on the benefits of intermittent fasting and I wish you much success in your health and wellness journey!!

Drink this every morning for supreme health!!

It has been touted as the “miracle tonic” by holistic doctors around the globe, a drink so healthy that it can actually cure cancer!! But what is this health elixir and why is it so good for you?

The answer: Sodium bicarbonate(baking soda), lemon juice, and high quality H2O.

Dr. Loyd Jenkins of the Budwig Center says: “If there is one thing you could do every day that would dramatically fight disease and increase your energy, consuming lemon juice combined with baking soda would be on the top of the list. Lemon in effect to being a natural internal cleanser and especially combined with baking soda has also shown to contain anti-carcinogenic properties as it contains limonoides, which are phytochemicals found in a number of citrus fruits. Apparently, the limonoides help strip off the protective layer coating of the cancer cells. Lemons have also been shown to have strong anti-microbial effects, which has been tested in research exploring the idea that cancer is very much like a fungus within the body. When treating cancer as a fungus, various methods can be used and some found that lemon and bicarbonate can help fight the fungus causing various types of cancer.”

Here is a list of the kind of benefits that drinking baking soda and lemons will do for you.

1.Alkalizes pH levels:

pH stands for the power of hydrogen, which is a measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in your body. The total pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 being neutral. A pH of less than 7 is said to be acidic, and a pH greater than 7 is said to be basic or alkaline. Our ideal pH is alkaline – 7.35 to 7.45, but poor diets and other toxins make our pH levels acidic, setting us up for various diseases such as; arthritis, digestive disorders, heart disease, and cancer. Keeping our pH levels in homeostatis will help our body ward off these diseases, remove toxins, and burn fat. Holistic doctors claim that by keeping your pH levels balanced you will NEVER get sick!! “One is not likely to fall into a cancerous condition if one’s blood and tissues are in an alkaline state” -Dr. Sircus

2. Purifies the liver:

The liver is a multi-functional organ responsible for many activities such as processing and eliminating toxins. Toxins are stored in fat cells, so by eliminating these toxins, your body will burn fat more efficiently. The liver also supports immune health. Since the liver reduces toxins, among other things, it makes sense that a healthy liver is crucial to a strong immune system.

3. Aids in digestion:

We already know that lemons contain many natural health benefits, such as helping promote digestion. Add a little baking soda and you get a fantastic mix to greatly improve your digestive system. It works as a great anti-acid and also combats acid reflux which occurs when hydrochloric acid travels up into the esophagus from the stomach.

4. Regulates cholesterol levels:

Drinking lemon water with baking soda helps regulate bad cholesterol levels(LDL) in your body, thus improving cardiovascular health.

5. Boosts energy:

Lemon water provides our bodies with plenty of vitamins, minerals and vital trace elements. It is also a great energy booster for when we wake up first thing in the morning, as our tissues are dehydrated and in desperate need of fluids to push out toxins. Baking soda gives the body a blast of oxygen because it is supplying the body instantly with more carbon dioxide (CO2) and this enables more oxygen to be delivered to the cells. More oxygen equals more energy.

In addition to adding lemon water and baking soda to your daily routine, staying hydrated, ingesting green foods rich in chlorophyll, getting plenty of healthy sun exposure, and of course, plenty of exercise, and slow breathing are going to help us avoid and treat cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

12 Reasons to Buy Organic.

In a world dominated by “fast” and processed foods loaded with harmful chemicals, it is imperative that we educate the general public on the benefits of buying organically grown and manufactured products. Here is a list of 12 reasons why we should all buy organic:

1. Reduces exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins.

Non-organic fruits and vegetables are laden with pesticides called neurotoxins or organophosphates which were originally developed in World War One as toxic nerve agents. After the war, when there was no longer a need for them, the food industry adopted them to ward off pests. Pesticides have been linked to a wide range of health hazards, ranging from short term impacts such as nausea and headaches to chronic impacts like cancer, reproductive harm, and endocrine disruption.

2. Higher nutritional value than “traditional” foods.

There is mounting evidence that organically grown foods generate more nutrients and less nitrates than “traditional” foods. In a review of 400 published papers comparing organic to non-organic foods, Soil Association Ltd. of the U.K. reported that organic crops were higher in vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. These photynutrients protect both people and plants while pesticides actually block the plants ability to manufacture these life-giving plant compounds.

3. Avoid GMOs.

A GMO or genetically modified organism, is a plant, animal, microorganism, or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods(also called gene splicing), gene modification. or transgenic technology. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial, and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

4. Avoid hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs found in animal products.

Most conventional livestock farmers use a toxic combination of growth hormones, drugs, feed supplements, and high-grain diets to push their animals to grow faster, get bigger, and produce more milk and eggs per day. In fact, animals on conventional farms are pushed so hard that they experience serious reproductive and other health problems leading to heavy antibiotic use.

5. Better tasting.

Organic foods have more flavor than their chemical-laden counterparts. Plus, no artificial food colors or preservatives are added to any organic foods.

6. Reduces pollution in water and soil.

Rainfall landing on a field of crops will carry a certain amount of soil, nutrients, and chemicals downstream or into underground aquifers. The more chemicals applied per acre, the greater the challenge in preserving soil and water quality.

7. Supports local farmers.

Going organic helps ensure independent family farmers can create a livelihood for themselves and their families.

8. Provides a safer working environment for farmers.

Research at the Harvard School of Public Health found a whopping 70% increase in Parkinson’s disease among people exposed to pesticides. Choosing to go organic means that more people would be able to work on farms free of these harmful chemicals without incurring the higher potential health risk of Parkinson’s disease or other illnesses.

9. Reduces the risk of cancer.

The US Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) considers 60% of herbicides, 90% of fungicides, and 30% of insecticides potentially carcinogenic. It is therefore reasonable to think that the rapidly increasing rates of cancer are partially linked to the use of these cancer-causing pesticides.

10. Provides a more humane existence for animals.

Free-range grassfed animals live a healthier, happier life, free of hormones, antibiotics, and other stressors that diminish the quality of the animals life.

11. Preserves our eco-system.

Organic food production eliminates soil and water contamination, helps preserve local wildlife, and conserves biodiversity.

12. Because the future of this planet and our children’s lives depend on it.

Let’s face it, all our lives depend on going organic. Mother Earth and our children are being poisoned and one way to help stop this catastrophe from happening is to buy only organic, Non-GMO foods.
